Pets Plus Us review: coverage, costs and claims

Pets Plus Us offers Accident and Accident & Illness insurance for Canadian dogs and cats. The right comparison starts with what your chosen plan covers, how its deductible changes as your pet ages, and the amount you must pay before reimbursement. Use this guide to compare the options, prepare questions for your local clinic, and check the policy details behind your quote.

The short answer

Is Pets Plus Us a good fit for your household?

It is worth comparing if you want a choice of coverage levels and an annual deductible. Look more closely if you need the insurer to settle a bill at checkout, expect routine care to be included, or want to avoid age-related deductible changes. Those needs require specific checks before you choose.

Choose the type of protection

Decide whether you want help with accidents alone or illnesses too. An urgent vet visit is not automatically an accident under the policy.

Look beyond the premium

Compare the yearly cost with your share of an eligible claim and any excluded charges. A lower monthly payment can leave a larger amount due after treatment.

Match the clinic’s payment process

Ask your daytime vet and backup hospital when payment is due. Keep a plan for the amount you may need to pay while an insurer assesses the claim.

Emergency does not mean accident: the current policy defines some sudden problems, including cruciate ligament conditions and dietary indiscretion, as illnesses. If you are considering Accident-only cover, ask how likely treatment scenarios would be classified. Read the policy’s definitions rather than relying on the everyday meaning of “accident.”

Check the deductible now and as your pet ages

The Accident & Illness plan uses an annual deductible with age-based options. Ask for the schedule that applies to your dog or cat, including what changes at the next age band. Do not assume the amount on today’s quote stays the same for life.

Record the premium, reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit together. Ask for the terms in writing if the quote screen and a general web page show different options.

Use our pet insurance coverage guides to understand the terms, then keep the provider’s answer beside each competing quote.

  • Current annual deductible
  • Next age-band change
  • Eligible-expense percentage
  • Remaining annual limit
  • Named exclusions
  • Renewal terms
A simple claim example

What would you pay on a $2,000 eligible bill?

Assume your policy reimburses 80%, your remaining annual deductible is $200, and the full $2,000 is eligible with enough annual limit left. The percentage is applied before the deductible, giving an illustrative reimbursement of $1,400.

Illustrative calculation in CAD

$2,000 × 80% = $1,600. Subtract the remaining $200 deductible: the insurer reimburses $1,400 and your share is $600.

If the deductible is already satisfied, reimbursement on the same eligible amount would be $1,600. Premiums, excluded charges, and any costs beyond the available limit are separate. This is not an estimate of veterinary prices in your city.

Calculation order follows the provider’s claims guidance linked above. Your actual deductible depends on your selected policy and pet; this example is not a quote.

Ask for a complete price comparison

Request the total monthly charge using your home address and the same pet details for every provider. Compare similar annual limits and reimbursement rates. A national average or another owner’s premium cannot show what your own household will pay.

Make it work where you live

Build a care plan around your local clinics

Pets Plus Us lists availability in all Canadian provinces and territories. Local planning still matters: the clinic you use, referral arrangements, and payment timing determine what you need ready before reimbursement. These are practical checks, not verified clinic listings or local price claims.

Metro Vancouver and the GTA

For households in Surrey, Burnaby, Mississauga, or Brampton, ask where your usual vet sends patients after closing. Confirm the receiving hospital’s intake process, deposit, and record-sharing arrangements separately.

Island, rural, and northern homes

If specialist care could require a longer drive, ferry trip, or overnight stay, ask your vet about the referral path. Budget for travel separately unless the contract expressly includes it. Keep an alternative hospital’s contact details handy.

Quebec households

If you live in Montréal, Laval, or Gatineau, use the provider’s Quebec-specific route and request the documents for your residence. Confirm plan options, service language, and any offer conditions before relying on a general Canadian summary.

Availability and Quebec distribution information: official Canadian coverage page. A provider’s availability does not establish a particular clinic’s payment arrangements.

Prepare before the visit

How Pets Plus Us claims work

The standard published process is reimbursement: pay the vet, collect an itemized invoice, and submit your claim through Pet Cloud with supporting records. Direct deposit sends reimbursement to you; it does not mean the hospital is paid instantly at checkout.

  1. Ask the clinic about payment. Confirm deposits and when the balance is due, especially for a referral or emergency visit.
  2. Keep a complete invoice. Make sure the pet’s details, treatment, charges, and payment information are readable.
  3. Submit records with the claim. Include the requested medical history so missing documents do not hold up assessment.
  4. Review the result. Check eligible charges, your share, and the deductible. Ask for clarification if the decision differs from what you expected.

The current Accident & Illness guide also describes an option to send a cheque to a veterinarian. Arrange and confirm this with both parties in advance; it is not a promise of immediate direct billing. The guide generally requires claims within 180 days of treatment, with separate rules after cancellation. Your policy version controls.

Is Costco pet insurance a different provider?

Costco’s Canadian pet insurance offer is through Pets Plus Us. Treat it as a member offer to compare, not a separate insurer when counting your options. The official partner page advertises a preferred rate and a complimentary first month, subject to offer terms.

Check the membership requirements, ongoing price after any introductory benefit, and whether coverage settings match a direct quote. A discount matters only after you compare the actual policy. Our Costco pet insurance review helps you assess that route.

Questions before choosing

Pets Plus Us insurance FAQs

Does Accident insurance cover a sudden illness?

No. Sudden onset does not turn an illness into an accident. Ask which policy category applies to a scenario and read the definitions before choosing Accident-only protection.

What are the waiting periods?

The published Accident & Illness summary lists 48 hours for accidents and 14 days for illnesses. Confirm the effective dates in your documents; conditions arising during waiting periods are excluded.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

The provider excludes pre-existing conditions. Symptoms before coverage can matter even if the diagnosis came later. Disclose the full history and ask about any exclusions attached to your pet.

Does the deductible change with age?

The Accident & Illness overview lists age-based deductible choices. Ask for your dog’s or cat’s full schedule, including the next age-band change, before comparing the long-term cost.

Can I use my usual vet?

The published claims guidance allows a licensed veterinarian in Canada, or the United States while travelling. Confirm eligibility and travel terms in your policy; clinic payment requirements still apply.

Does the insurer pay the vet at checkout?

Its standard process is reimbursement after you pay. Any alternative arrangement needs advance confirmation with the clinic and insurer. Do not confuse reimbursement by direct deposit with direct payment to a hospital.

Is routine care included?

Routine preventive care is separate from the core Accident & Illness protection. The provider advertises optional wellness plans. Compare the extra annual cost with the specific benefits you expect to use.

Is Pets Plus Us available in Quebec?

The provider lists availability in all provinces and territories, including Quebec, and offers a Quebec-specific site. Confirm the documents and options applicable to your residence.

Is Costco coverage from Pets Plus Us?

Yes. Costco’s Canadian offer is through Pets Plus Us. Check the current membership offer and compare the ongoing price using identical coverage settings.

What if I disagree with a claim decision?

Ask for the reason and the policy term used. The provider has a reassessment route for additional medical evidence and a separate complaints process. Follow the instructions and deadlines in your own policy.

Sources include the coverage and claims pages above, the policy guide library, and the official complaints process. General information is not a coverage decision.

Compare a quote you can understand

Have your pet’s age, breed, medical history, home address, and preferred coverage level ready. Ask for today’s deductible, future age-based changes, and a worked claim example before deciding.
