One annual allowance
The main annual limit is shared across eligible treatment. Track the remaining amount if your pet needs several visits or ongoing care.
Furkin offers accident and illness insurance for cats and dogs, with a $20,000 annual limit and 80% reimbursement of eligible expenses, less the applicable deductible. This review explains what those numbers mean for your budget, what to check before enrolment, and how local veterinary payment arrangements affect your next step.
Not offered in Quebec or Nunavut. Check your residence before requesting a quote.

Furkin belongs on your shortlist if you want accident and illness cover with an annual deductible and can pay the clinic before reimbursement. Compare another option if routine wellness bills are your main concern, you need a higher annual ceiling, or your province or territory is not served.
The main annual limit is shared across eligible treatment. Track the remaining amount if your pet needs several visits or ongoing care.
Budget for the deductible, co-insurance and charges the contract excludes. The advertised percentage is not a promise to pay that share of every invoice.
Ask how the deductible changes as your pet ages and what may change at renewal. Choose a monthly cost you can keep paying over time.
Plan overview: Furkin’s published benefits. This is a document-based review, not a firsthand claims test.

Dental injury is not the same as routine dental care. Ask how the policy treats the specific diagnosis and treatment on your vet’s estimate. Do not assume a dental cleaning or existing dental problem qualifies because injury benefits are mentioned.
Use our pet insurance coverage guides to compare exclusions as carefully as benefits. For any extra benefit, record its own dollar limit and conditions rather than adding it to the main medical allowance.
Furkin applies your 20% co-insurance before subtracting the remaining annual deductible. Compare the total you would pay, not just the percentage on the quote.
Assume $2,000 in fully eligible expenses, a $300 unpaid deductible, and enough remaining annual benefits.
$2,000 × 80% − $300 = $1,300 reimbursed. Your share is $700. If that deductible were already satisfied, reimbursement on the same eligible bill would be $1,600.
This is a calculation example, not a premium quote, local vet fee estimate or confirmation of a deductible option for your pet.
Calculation order: Furkin’s explanation of co-insurance and deductibles.
Furkin identifies location, pet characteristics and age among pricing factors. A sample price for another household is not your rate. Compare quotes using the same pet details and record the premium, deductible, annual limit and exclusions together.
Ask what deductible will apply at the next age band. Do not assume the premium stays fixed simply because an insurer does not price a renewal around an individual claim.
Furkin publishes waiting periods of 48 hours for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and 180 days for cruciate ligament conditions. These run from the policy effective date. Confirm the actual end date for each category before assuming treatment can qualify.
Symptoms that start before cover or during a waiting period can affect eligibility even if the diagnosis comes later. Provide the full medical history and ask for a written explanation of any exclusion. Do not delay needed care while waiting for insurance to begin.

The current brochure requires pets to be at least seven weeks old and under 14 years old at enrolment. It says policies can continue to renew after that age. Ask about ongoing eligibility and renewal terms rather than treating this as a guarantee that pricing or benefits never change.

Availability is the first check. Furkin currently excludes Quebec and Nunavut. Use your actual home address, even when your usual vet is across a provincial boundary.

An Ottawa clinic does not make a Gatineau resident eligible for a product unavailable in Quebec. If you plan to move across the river, ask Furkin how a change of residence affects an existing policy before relying on continued cover.
Ask your regular clinic where it refers after-hours or specialist cases. Confirm the referral hospital’s intake and deposit requirements. Keep those payment details alongside your insurance documents so you know what must be paid before a claim is assessed.
If referral care requires a trip into the city, plan transport, time away and any overnight expenses separately. Ask whether a specific travel cost has a policy benefit; do not assume the medical limit pays for the whole journey.
Furkin’s dog insurance page describes use with licensed vets in Canada or the U.S. Before a trip, ask about travel conditions, required records and how a U.S.-dollar invoice is reimbursed. Access to an eligible vet does not confirm payment of every charge.

The published process is reimbursement: pay the veterinary bill, then submit the claim. Plan for the amount the clinic requires upfront, even when you expect part of it to qualify.

No. Furkin’s current availability page excludes Quebec and Nunavut. Use your residence, not your clinic’s address, when checking eligibility.
Yes. Its main medical benefit is capped at $20,000 per policy year. Separate benefits may have their own limits and rules.
No. It reimburses 80% of eligible expenses, less the applicable annual deductible. Excluded charges remain your responsibility.
It is annual. Ask for the amount at your selected option and pet’s age, plus the schedule for later years.
Routine preventive care, including vaccines and dental cleanings, is excluded. Budget for those costs outside the policy.
Ask Furkin to assess eligibility and exclusions from the medical history. Enrolment does not mean a known condition will be covered.
Published waits are 48 hours for accidents, 14 days for illness and 180 days for cruciate ligament conditions, measured from the policy effective date.
Its published claim process requires you to pay first and seek reimbursement. Do not rely on direct clinic payment unless a different arrangement is confirmed.
The current brochure sets new enrolment at seven weeks or older and under age 14. Confirm the precise eligibility date if your pet is approaching that limit.
Compare the proposed exclusions, waiting periods and effective dates first. A condition covered by an existing policy may be excluded under a new one.
Have your pet’s age, breed, medical history and home address ready. Request the premium and deductible schedule together, then use the claim example to check what you could need to pay yourself.
A quote does not activate coverage or guarantee a claim payment.
