Costco pet insurance review: member savings and coverage

Costco pet insurance in Canada is a Pets Plus Us member offer. The discount can reduce your premium, but the policy’s limits, exclusions and your share of a claim still matter. This guide helps you compare the member pricing, choose between accident-only and accident and illness cover, and plan for veterinary costs where you live.

The short answer

Is Costco pet insurance worth comparing?

Yes, if you are comparing the Pets Plus Us policy and its final member price against other suitable quotes. A discount alone does not show which policy fits your pet. Start with the coverage you need, then compare the premium and the amount you would pay after a claim.

Know who handles the policy

The Canadian program is underwritten by Northbridge General Insurance Corporation. The Costco name does not make the warehouse your claims department.

Separate savings from benefits

A membership discount reduces eligible premium costs. It does not increase the annual benefit limit or remove exclusions.

Compare your final price

Use the same pet details and similar coverage settings on every quote. A larger discount can still produce a higher final premium.

Understand the member offer

Executive, Gold Star and Business member savings

Published Canadian member offer — confirm the terms on your quote
Membership Advertised preferred rate What to confirm
Executive 15% off Discount shown on your quote
Gold Star 10% off Membership validation requirements
Business, non-Executive 10% off Applicable offer and exclusions

The Costco page also advertises a complimentary first month for new Pets Plus Us clients. Confirm eligibility, how it appears in the payment schedule, and any terms before relying on that saving.

Should you upgrade membership for the insurance discount?

Compare the extra annual insurance saving with the extra membership cost. For illustration only, if the eligible premium before either discount were $1,200 a year, 10% off would save $120 and 15% off would save $180. The additional saving would be $60, not another 15% of the discounted price.

This is not a pet insurance quote or a current membership-fee calculation. Ask whether discounts apply to all premium components, whether other offers combine, and what happens if your membership level changes.

Choose the risk you want covered

Accident-only versus accident and illness

Annual limits published on the Costco partner page, in CAD
Plan Annual limit Key distinction
Accident $5,000 Eligible accidental injuries; no illness cover
Accident and illness $7,500 or $15,000 Eligible injuries and illnesses, subject to exclusions

Limits: official Costco partner offer linked above. Product features can vary by province, territory and eligibility. Request the documents for the plan actually offered to you.

Accident-only cover can leave a large gap if your main concern is a future illness. Check the diagnosis categories you want help with rather than choosing from the premium alone. The coverage guides explain the terms to compare.

Routine care needs its own budget

Pets Plus Us describes wellness as an optional paid addition to accident and illness insurance. Ask whether it is offered with your quote, which services it reimburses and what separate limits apply. Do not assume vaccines or routine exams are included in the base policy.

Check waiting periods and earlier symptoms

The published accident and illness overview lists a 48-hour accident wait and a 14-day illness wait. Earlier symptoms and conditions arising during the applicable wait can be excluded. Ask for exact effective dates and read any exclusions before changing an existing policy.

What would you pay on a claim?

Ask for your annual deductible and co-insurance on the written quote. Pets Plus Us explains that co-insurance is applied before any unpaid deductible.

A worked example

Assume $2,000 in fully eligible expenses, 80% reimbursement, a $300 unpaid deductible and sufficient remaining benefits.

$2,000 × 80% − $300 = $1,300 reimbursed. Your share is $700, plus any charges that do not qualify.

This is an illustration, not a local vet fee estimate or confirmation of a deductible offered for your pet.

Keep the clinic’s required payment separate from the eventual reimbursement. Even a claim that qualifies can require you to fund the bill first. Ask about next year’s deductible and renewal terms as well as the first-year premium.

Use your home address, not your warehouse

Local details to check before comparing quotes

Montréal, Laval and Longueuil

Use the Quebec offer and request documents in your preferred language. Ask who handles policy questions and claims; the program’s Quebec distribution details differ from the rest of Canada.

Ottawa and Gatineau

If your vet is across the river, use your actual province of residence on the quote. Confirm the clinic’s deposit rules and how it supplies records. The warehouse you shop at does not determine your insurance address.

Surrey, Langley and nearby communities

Ask your regular vet where it refers urgent or specialist cases. Keep the receiving hospital’s payment requirements with your policy details. A nearby Costco warehouse is not a veterinary referral or claims service.

For households outside a major city

If care involves travelling into a regional centre, keep fuel, lodging and time away separate from the medical estimate. Ask whether any specific travel expense qualifies rather than assuming the annual medical benefit covers the whole trip.

The provider states availability across Canadian provinces and territories, but features and discounts can vary. These local examples are planning questions, not verified clinic listings or claims that premiums are the same everywhere.

Use the insurer’s claims route

How to submit a Costco Pets Plus Us claim

  1. Get the clinic’s payment terms. Ask what is due at admission and after treatment.
  2. Keep the final paid invoice. Make sure the pet’s name, treatments and invoice details are readable.
  3. Gather medical records. Ask the clinic for the documentation needed to explain the treatment.
  4. Submit through the current member portal. Follow Pets Plus Us instructions for your policy and keep a copy.
  5. Review the assessment. Check eligible charges, cost-sharing and remaining benefits. Ask for clarification if an exclusion is unclear.

Source: Pets Plus Us claim instructions and cost-sharing explanation. The published process says to pay the vet first. Direct deposit reimburses you; it does not mean the clinic receives payment at checkout.

For a disputed assessment, use the insurer’s review process rather than a Costco merchandise return counter. Confirm the submission deadline in the applicable policy guides and forms.

Costco pet insurance FAQs

Who provides Costco pet insurance in Canada?

The member offer is through Pets Plus Us, with Northbridge General Insurance Corporation identified as the underwriter. Use the policy documents for the correct service and claims contacts.

How much is the Costco member discount?

The published offer lists 15% for Executive members and 10% for Gold Star and non-Executive Business members. Confirm the applicable discount on your current quote.

Is the first month complimentary?

The Costco page advertises a complimentary first month for new Pets Plus Us clients. Check eligibility and the payment schedule before counting it in your budget.

Does Executive membership increase the coverage limit?

The advertised difference is the premium discount. Your selected insurance plan determines its benefit limit; do not assume membership upgrades add medical coverage.

Does accident-only cover illnesses?

No. The accident plan is for eligible injuries. Compare accident and illness cover if you also want help with future eligible illnesses.

Is the member offer available in Quebec?

Pets Plus Us states availability in all provinces and territories, including Quebec. Confirm the Quebec offer, distribution details and applicable documents.

Can I use the policy at my usual vet?

Ask the provider to confirm the treatment-location rules and ask your clinic about payment. Eligibility for reimbursement does not establish a direct-billing arrangement.

Do I send a claim to Costco?

Use Pets Plus Us claims instructions and the current member portal. A warehouse customer-service desk is not the policy’s claims route.

Will a membership discount remove pre-existing-condition exclusions?

No. The discount affects pricing, not medical eligibility. Ask how earlier symptoms and treatment affect the proposed policy.

Should I switch just to get the member discount?

Compare exclusions, waiting periods and ongoing care first. A lower premium may not offset losing coverage for a condition already insured under your current plan.

Ready for a useful comparison?

Check the member quote against the coverage you need

Have your membership level, home address, pet details and health history ready. Request the final premium, deductible, exclusions and benefit limit together so you can compare the whole policy.
